Part 3 — A family with room for the truth

They talked until a gentle knock interrupted them. Sophie stood outside with Ben and a sleepy Emma. She looked from Gabriel’s face to Adriana’s and immediately understood more than either adult expected.
“You told her about Mum?” she asked.
Gabriel nodded.
Sophie turned to Adriana. “We can have both. That’s what Grandma says.”
She crouched so she was level with her.
“You don’t have to explain that to me.”

Ben wanted to know whether they were still going on the planned holiday. Emma wanted someone to take off her uncomfortable shoes. Their questions returned the room to its proper size.
Later, Adriana carried Emma downstairs while Gabriel walked beside Sophie. Nobody at the reception received a public explanation. The family history belonged to the people who had lived it, and sharing it with a wife did not mean announcing it into a microphone.
In the weeks afterward, Gabriel and Adriana kept talking. They discussed trust with a counselor, not because their marriage had already failed, but because they wanted to learn how to handle difficult truths together.
A photograph of Lily found a place on a shelf in their home. On her birthday, the children chose flowers and told Adriana stories, some funny, some sad, all worth hearing.
When a visitor later called Gabriel lucky, Adriana looked across the kitchen. He was helping Ben with homework while Sophie argued that Emma had stolen her pencil.
“Yes,” she said, smiling. “We are.”
