Part 1 — The missing card

My brother called at six on a Friday evening and asked if he could sleep on my sofa. His voice had the strained brightness I remembered from childhood, when he broke something and hoped I would help him hide it.

“Just until Monday,” he said.

I had spent years making room for Luke. When his rent fell behind, I covered it. When his car stopped running, he borrowed mine. I told myself that helping family was different from being taken advantage of. I needed that distinction.

He arrived with a sports bag and groceries I later realized he had bought with my money.

On Saturday morning, my bank card was missing. I assumed I had left it inside yesterday’s jacket. Then my phone displayed a payment alert, followed by another. By the time I checked the account, the balance was zero.

Luke was gone too.

I contacted the bank, blocked the card, and reported the transactions I had not authorized. While I followed the steps they gave me, a message arrived from my brother.

“Don’t panic. I’ll put it back.”

I read it. He had watched me enter my PIN during a shopping trip. He knew where I kept my wallet. He had waited until I slept.

The money was not spare cash. It covered rent, bills, and the last payment on a course I had taken after work for almost a year.

I called him. No answer. Our mother answered instead when I tried her number.

“Please don’t make this bigger,” she said.

That was when I understood she already knew.
